Along the southern Imera Valley, once the border between "Sicula" and "Sicana" Sicily, and then between Sicily Citra and Ultra Flumen Salsum, Monte Capodarso is characterized by a long ochre-colored calcarenite "cuesta" which plunges until it reaches the level of the river waters which form spectacular gorges. It presents a geology that ranges from the Tortonian to the full Pliocene, with karst phenomena such as the Grotta delle Meraviglie, and the remains of a Hellenized indigenous center. Among the remains is a curtain wall, and on top, a very mysterious staircase that falls into the void.
