Monte Altesina

Monte Altesina is the highest peak of the Erei Mountains. Cloaked in a dense natural forest dominated by holm oak, the mountain conceals evidence of a long human presence dating back to the Bronze Age. Of great interest, on the remains near the summit, is a Shahada, the Islamic profession of faith carved in Arabic script. Within the woods you will also find the restored Altesinella farmstead, the ruins of the Convent of Sant'Erasmo (or Santa Maria di Lartisina) and several rocky areas with necropolises featuring grotto-cell tombs. Remarkable, too, is the wildlife, including rare species such as the sparrowhawk and the wildcat.
