The gilding of wood and the agate stone.

Sports
In the vast world of craftsmanship and art, there exists an ancient technique that bestows timeless beauty upon wood: gilding with gold leaf. But there is an additional secret to gilding: the use of agate stone.

Gilding wood requires the use of specific materials and tools to achieve spectacular results. The primary star of the show is gold, which is beaten into ultra-thin sheets, known as "gold leaf." These leaves, obtained through a process of hammering pure gold between layers of oxhide, reach a thickness of only 0.1-0.2 microns, making them manageable and easily transferable onto the wood's surface.
In the gilding of wood, agate stone, a natural material with unique properties, is also employed. Agate is a variety of quartz characterized by its hardness and colorful striations. This stone is used during the processing procedure to smooth and polish the gold leaf, creating effects of light and reflections that amplify the beauty of the gold on wood.
The process of gilding wood with gold leaf and agate stone demands great skill and precision. The master artisan begins by meticulously preparing the wood's surface through careful sanding to achieve a smooth and flawless base. Subsequently, a layer of special glue, known as "gesso," is applied, serving as an adhesive base for the gold leaf.
At this point, the master artisan delicately extracts a thin sheet of gold leaf from its packaging, using specialized knives or tweezers. The leaf is placed with great precision on the adhesive surface, avoiding wrinkles or imperfections. Following this step, the master artisan takes the agate stone and uses it to gently smooth the gold leaf, creating a uniform and smooth effect on the wood's surface.
The use of agate stone during the process allows the master artisan to create unique effects. Through slow and controlled movements, the agate stone allows for modulation of pressure and direction during smoothing, resulting in gradients and reflections that enhance the gold and add depth to the gilded wood's surface.
The master artisan's skill is evident in the harmony between the gold leaf, agate stone, and the wood itself. They can transform a simple piece of wood into a sparkling work of art, capturing light and creating reflections that bestow a unique splendor. Their steady hand and patience are essential for achieving exceptionally high-quality results and making the gold shine on the wood's surface. Gilding wood with gold leaf and agate stone is an art that should be preserved and cherished, as it represents a precious testament to ancient craftsmanship traditions and enriches our cultural heritage.
This delicate and extraordinary technique can be found in some of the most beautiful artistic places in Enna, and in the town, there is a Restoration Workshop that offers tourists the opportunity to experience the technique under the watchful eye of the Master Artisan.
