A deep canyon carved in Pliocene calcarenite along the San Giovannello valley, with rapids, gorges, disused mills and the spectacular San Tommaso shelter.
Along the valley of the San Giovannello, also mistakenly known as Torcicoda, the waters have carved a deep canyon into the thick, ochre-coloured calcarenite banks of the Pliocene. Here the landscape becomes extremely wild despite the very short distance from the town of Enna. The valley features small rapids, gorge passages and several traces of human presence, with mills that are now disused and the vast and spectacular San Tommaso rock shelter.
Getting there
It is reached from the SS 117 bis, along the stretch between the Benesiti junction and the Scioltalbino junction. Accessible by car/motorbike and bicycle. Address: SS 117 bis, Enna.
Access & visits
Open every day of the year. Suitable for families with children (a guide is required). Required equipment: comfortable clothing suited to the season, backpack, trekking shoes, 1.5 l water bottle.
