Lago e Valle del Morello

The Morello is a tributary of the southern Imera; it rises on Monte Altesina and, tracing a wide curve, reaches the area west of Villarosa with its course intact from a naturalistic standpoint. The river has carved through thick Messinian deposits which, in the past, were explored for the extraction of sulphur. Among the gypsum formations, spectacular in shape, one can still see the remains of the Gaspa mines. Further downstream the river was artificially dammed by the Ferrara dam, creating Lake Morello. The whole area is densely dotted with archaeological sites such as Gaspa, Bastione and Giulfo.
