Monte Gaspa is a plateau formed of a bank of calcarenite.
Monte Gaspa is a plateau formed of a bank of calcarenite. Until the 1930s, the summit tableland held a lake of tectonic-karst origin called Lago Stelo, whose outline is still perfectly visible today. The lake was drained by creating a network of drainage channels and a tunnel that carries the water beyond the edge of the basin. The summit is covered by a dense pine wood, at the top of which lies an ancient sacrificial altar carved into the rock. A little further down, meanwhile, is a small open-air (sub divo) early-Christian necropolis.
Getting there
Easily reached from Calascibetta by following the SS 290 as far as the Buscella junction.
