A Natura 2000 site with gypsum and Messinian evaporite rock banks, arid landscapes, karst phenomena and remains of sulphur mines and gypsum quarries.
A Natura 2000 site located immediately to the west of the mountain of Enna, it is characterised by massive rocky banks of Messinian evaporites, and in particular of gypsum and gypsarenites. Here this geological feature creates extensive arid landscapes with gypsophilous flora and surface karst phenomena. Along the long ridge lie the remains of both an ancient Christian hermitage and of the sulphur mines and the quarries of gypsum and gypsarenites, including alabastrine varieties.
Getting there
It is reached from the SS 117 bis along the Enna–Caltanissetta stretch, or from Enna Alta by way of a steep local road. Accessible by bicycle and by car/motorbike. Address: Strada Comunale Enna 29, Enna.
Access & visits
Open every day of the year. Suitable for families with children (a guide is required). Required equipment: comfortable clothing suited to the season, backpack, trekking shoes, 1.5 l water bottle.
