An excursion to the Monte Altesina nature reserve, the 'navel of the island', among rock-cut tombs, convent ruins and a Sikel-Greek village.

The non-profit cultural association Hisn al-Giran was founded in Calascibetta in July 2011, out of a shared desire to promote and enhance the Calascibetta area through excursions and cultural events. Monte Altesina is the navel of the island, chosen by the Arabs as the geographical centre from which to command Sicily. Walking along its trails, you discover a route of great charm, along which you come upon tombs carved into the rock, the ruins of an ancient monastery, a Siculo-Greek village and an inscription in Arabic, for a historical journey from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

Requirements & gear

Required equipment: comfortable clothing suitable for the season, a backpack, high-ankle hiking boots, a 2-litre water bottle. Recommended equipment: rain poncho, binoculars, camera, trekking poles.

Getting there & accessibility

Reachable by bicycle, by car/motorbike, by funicular or similar. Meeting point: Enna, Bivio Misericordia. Suitable for families with children.
