The village in the rock: the Byzantine Village

The non-profit cultural association Hisn al-Giran was founded in Calascibetta in July 2011, out of a shared desire to promote and enhance the Calascibetta area through excursions and cultural events. The Byzantine Village is a place where archaeology and nature intertwine harmoniously; it is an ancient rock-hewn settlement, rising among centuries-old trees and conifers, where the tombs, the columbaria, the wine presses, the qanat and the Byzantine rock church are still clearly visible. The Byzantine Village tells the stories carved into the rock by the peoples who succeeded one another here from prehistory onwards.
