A full excursion from the Realmese Necropolis to the Byzantine Village, among 300 protohistoric tombs and landscapes overlooking Etna.

The non-profit cultural association Hisn al-Giran was founded in Calascibetta in July 2011, out of a shared desire to promote and enhance the Calascibetta area through excursions and cultural events. An excursion to discover two of the most beautiful and interesting archaeological sites in Sicily. The route begins at the Necropolis of Realmese, with three hundred small tombs of protohistoric age. Green valleys, gentle hills, mountains and Etna will accompany us towards the Byzantine Village, a place where nature and history meet harmoniously, revealing one surprise after another.

Requirements & gear

Required equipment: comfortable clothing suitable for the season, a backpack, high-ankle hiking boots, a 1.5-litre water bottle. Recommended equipment: rain poncho, binoculars, camera, trekking poles.

Getting there & accessibility

Reachable by bicycle, by car/motorbike, by funicular or similar. Meeting point: Calascibetta, Piazza S. Barbara. Suitable for families with children.
